About the application

The UVA School of Data Science will continue to offer its high-quality online MSDS program, uninterrupted, with the help of our dedicated faculty, administration, partners and support staff.

You can learn more about the application process and requirements on this page. Please get in touch with our enrollment team so that we can support you in your application process.

You can contact us via phone at 434-270-7804 or via email at onlinedatascience@virginia.edu.

Many institutions are currently able to process transcripts electronically. However, we understand that universities may be struggling with staffing availability during these times. Therefore, please contact an enrollment advisor if you’re unable to secure the required information and we’ll work with you to find a viable path forward.

Applicants who apply by the early submit deadline are among the first reviewed for admission.

Please contact the School of Data Science Online Enrollment Team via phone at 434-270-7804 or via email at onlinedatascience@virginia.edu with questions about the online application.

No, we are only able to evaluate completed applications after the application deadline.

We apply a holistic approach to our admissions process, considering all application materials submitted by an applicant.

There is no preference. Each year, we expect to have students who have just finished their degrees and students who have been working professionals and are returning to school.

Students in other programs are welcome to apply but are considered the same as other applicants. In particular, work from other programs cannot be applied to the MSDS program.

About test scores and GPA

The UVA MSDS is GRE/GMAT test optional.

We do not make information about average GPA or TOFEL scores publicly available, but the MSDS has 3.0 minimum GPA requirement for admission.

The TOEFL/IELTS is not required of applicants who have or will have obtained an undergraduate degree entirely from an institution (or institutions) in which English is the primary language of instruction. The TOEFL/IELTS requirement will be waived automatically for an applicant who submits an application with evidence of these circumstances. All other international applicants must self-report either a TOEFL or IELTS score on the application (either type of IELTS exam is fine).

The School of Data Science does not require official test scores at the time of your application submission but will require that you send official scores if you matriculate as a student.

If you wish to have your official test scores sent, then TOEFL scores should be submitted via ETS using institution code B875 (no department code needed).

Official IELTS scores should be submitted electronically by the IELTS test center. No paper Test Report Forms will be accepted. No institution code or department code is needed. Please contact the test center directly where you took the IELTS test and request that your test scores be sent electronically using the IELTS system. All IELTS test centers worldwide are able to send scores electronically to our institution.

Yes. The minimum internet-based (iBT) TOEFL score requirement is 90 (including sectional minimums of 22 in speaking, 22 in writing, 23 in reading, and 23 in listening).

The minimum paper-based TOEFL score requirement is 600. Applicants may submit scores from the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) instead of TOEFL scores. The minimum IELTS score requirement is 7.0 total and in each section (either type of IELTS exam is fine).

The admission committee will not consider applications with scores that do not meet the minimum requirements. The TOEFL/IELTS must be taken within the last two years to be considered valid. Only valid scores will be considered by the admission committee.

Yes, a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0 is required.

About the program

University of Virginia School of Data Science Technical Bootcamp:
In this short asynchronous course, you will learn the basic tools of data science and be prepared to hit the ground running in your for-credit classes. This course is your one-stop-shop for getting your laptop and yourself into shape for the UVA Data Science online MSDS program. We will cover essential computer fundamentals and all the tools you need to develop code and build your first analysis pipeline. Specific technologies covered include Git using GitHub, R with Rstudio, and Python 3. We will also introduce some key packages for these languages.

University of Virginia School of Data Science Technical Hackathon:
This synchronous programming event will be held at the end of the asynchronous technical bootcamp. You, along with other UVA Data Science students, will work together to create a data analysis pipeline from scratch, by taking on a data set all the way through visualization. By the end of the bootcamp and hackathon, you will be able to:

  1. Perform data analysis using logical constructs of a programming language.

  2. Translate data into a clear and effective presentation of analysis results.

  3. Demonstrate the ability to productively participate in group situations involving problem-solving, decision-making, and communication skills.

The online MSDS can be completed in five terms/two years. At this time, students are not permitted to adjust the pace of the program.

The School of Data Science currently only offers the Master of Science in Data Science (MSDS) online.

No. The online MSDS program is not eligible for the F-1 visa STEM Optional Practical Training (OPT) extension because the online program is non-residential.

About finances

  • Yes. Many students mistakenly think they do not qualify for aid when in fact they may qualify. Federal Direct Loans are available regardless of income.
  • If you have questions or want additional information about financial aid options, visit UVA Student Financial Services or contact SFS at (434) 982-6000 or sfs@virginia.edu.

The Master of Science in Data Science is a professional program, similar to a JD or an MBA. As such, we do not have fellowships or assistantships, but many students are able to secure loans or employer support.

Yes, a non-refundable admission tuition deposit will be required if an offer of admission is accepted. This deposit will be applied toward tuition. Please contact an enrollment advisor at onlinedatascience@virginia.edu or via phone at (434) 270-7804 to learn more.
